What's going on

Cyclical breast tenderness and pain

Sore before your period, calmer after. There is a name for it.

Breast pain that arrives on a schedule has a clinical name, cyclical mastalgia, and it is the single most common breast complaint women bring to anyone. Roughly two thirds of women live with some version of it.

What's actually happening

  • Rising and falling hormones change how much fluid your breast tissue holds.
  • More fluid means more pressure, and breast tissue has plenty of nerve endings to notice it.
  • Pain is usually in both breasts, often heaviest in the upper outer area and toward the armpit.
  • It typically builds in the second half of your cycle and fades within days of your period starting.

Is this normal?

Predictable, both-sided soreness that comes and goes with your cycle is the ordinary pattern. Pain alone is rarely a sign of anything serious. That does not mean you have to just live with it.

Common and expected

  • Both breasts ache or feel heavy
  • Pain follows your cycle
  • A dull, full, swollen feeling
  • Relief within a few days of bleeding

Worth a clinical look

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in one spot
  • Pain in one breast only that never lets up
  • Severe itching or skin changes
  • Redness with warmth or fever

Any of these and we skip straight to care. Well Woman Wellness Center handles the clinical side.
