Hemangioma

A hemangioma is a harmless collection of extra blood vessels that can form a small spot or lump on the skin.

What it is

A hemangioma is a common, harmless growth made of extra blood vessels. They often look like a red or purplish spot on the skin, but they can also form deeper inside the breast tissue. They are not a sign of a health problem.

How common it is

Hemangiomas are very common in babies. While less common in adults, they can sometimes be found in the breast, often by chance on an imaging test like a mammogram.

What you may notice

You might see a small, reddish or purple spot on your breast skin. If it's deeper, you might feel a soft lump. Most hemangiomas do not cause any symptoms.

What can contribute

Why hemangiomas form is not fully understood. They are not caused by anything you did or did not do.

How it is usually checked

Often, a hemangioma is found on a mammogram or ultrasound. Because they have a very specific look, a provider can often identify them with imaging alone. In some cases, a biopsy might be suggested to be certain of the diagnosis.

Does this change my long-term risk?

Having a hemangioma in your breast does not change your long-term breast health risk. They are considered a harmless finding.

Comfort and everyday care

  • Be gentle with the area to avoid irritating the skin.
  • Wear soft, non-irritating bras and clothing if the spot is sensitive.
  • Some women find that applying a simple, gentle moisturizer helps keep the skin soft.

When to get it checked

  • You notice a new red or purplish spot on your breast skin.
  • You feel a new lump or thickening in your breast.
  • An existing spot or lump changes in size or shape.
  • The area becomes painful, swollen, or starts to bleed.
