Breast Leiomyoma

Also called Smooth muscle tumor of the nipple

A rare, benign growth made of smooth muscle, usually found in or just under the nipple or areola.

What it is

A leiomyoma is a benign growth made of smooth muscle tissue. In the breast, it most often forms in the nipple or the darker skin around it, called the areola, where small muscle fibers naturally live.

How common it is

Breast leiomyomas are rare. They are most often found in women in their middle years.

What you may notice

You may notice a small, firm bump in or under the nipple or areola. Some women feel tenderness, while others notice nothing at all.

What can contribute

The exact cause is not known. They grow from the tiny muscle fibers that help the nipple respond to touch and temperature.

How it is usually checked

Your provider will examine the area and may suggest an ultrasound. A small biopsy is usually needed to confirm what it is, and some are removed.

Does this change my long-term risk?

A breast leiomyoma is benign and does not change your long-term breast health risk.

Comfort and everyday care

  • Wearing a soft, well-fitted bra can reduce rubbing on a tender nipple.
  • Choosing gentle, fragrance-free soaps and lotions may help the skin around the area feel calmer.

When to get it checked

  • You notice a new bump in or under your nipple or areola.
  • A bump gets larger or changes how it feels.
  • You see nipple discharge, bleeding, or a nipple that newly turns inward.
  • The skin over the area becomes red, scaly, or does not heal.
